Biography
Ioanna Maroulakou is a Professor of Genetics at the Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics of Democritus University of Thrace and Director of the Laboratory of Genetics and Genomics of Cancer and Chronic Diseases. She received her degree in Biology and completed her Ph.D. in Biology, specializing in Neuroscience, at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, followed by postdoctoral training in Molecular Oncology at the National Cancer Institute (NIH), USA. Her research focuses on the molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying human disease, with particular emphasis on cancer development and progression, tumour dormancy and recurrence, as well as neurodevelopmental and neurodegenerative disorders. Her laboratory employs genetically engineered models, genomics, computational biology, and multi-omics approaches to investigate disease mechanisms, epigenetic dysregulation, brain function and behavior, and the identification of biomarkers for Alzheimer’s disease.
