through the lens of evolution

Two Institutions. One Vision.

Founded in 1974, the Democritus University of Thrace is one of Greece’s leading universities. The Laboratory of Biological Anthropology within the School of Humanities brings an internationally recognised track record in biological anthropology and bioarchaeology connecting past and present.

Established in 1833 and ranked among the world’s top 100 universities, the University of Zurich hosts the Institute of Evolutionary Medicine (IEM) — one of Europe’s pioneering centres in this field. The IEM brings over two decades of focused research to this collaboration.

What is Evolutionary Medicine?

Evolutionary Medicine applies modern evolutionary theory to understand health and disease. While conventional medicine asks how biological mechanisms cause illness, evolutionary medicine asks why evolution shaped those mechanisms in ways that leave us susceptible.

From cardiovascular disease and obesity to autoimmune disorders, depression, and cancer — many of the most pressing health challenges of our time are rooted in a mismatch between our evolutionary past and our modern lifestyle. This programme trains you to understand that mismatch, and to use it.

Why Does Evolution Leave Us Vulnerable to Disease?
